International Fund Raising for Not-for-Profits: A Country-by-Country Profile
Edited by Thomas Harris
This book assesses the potential for fund raising in 18 countries. It outlines legal and taxation issues in each nation.
Authors from their respective nations examine the state of philanthropy in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Estonia, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Those countries were chosen for the sophistication of fund raising within their borders — and because they cover such a big part of the globe, writes Mr. Harris, an international fund-raising consultant and founder of the Virtual Consulting Firm.
The section on each country contains information on its philanthropic history and economic place in the world; its legal and tax systems; its corporate, foundation, and individual giving, providing statistics of the latter and rankings of the top grant-making institutions where available; and its commonly accepted fund-raising practices.
Each chapter concludes with a few paragraphs of advice for the individual bearing both passport and hat in hand.
For example: “To work effectively with the Dutch, it is necessary to thoroughly appreciate the strong Calvinist streak running through all things Dutch, to be willing to live with Dutch contradictions, and to incorporate the Dutch propensity for consensus…”
Each chapter also contains a bibliography and addresses of organizations that are resources for fund raisers.
