No Strings Attached: Untangling the Risks of Fundraising & Collaboration
By Melanie L. Herman and Dennis M. Kirschbaum
This book examines the hazards that accompany fund-raising ventures and offers advice to executives and board members at non-profit organizations on how to escape embarrassment, scandal, and lawsuits.
Ms. Herman and Mr. Kirschbaum, executive director and manager of information technology at the Nonprofit Risk Management Center, respectively, explore the risks of soliciting funds from foundations, corporations, and individuals. They warn grant seekers not to stray from their organizations’ missions when asking for money, and to exercise caution when entering into partnerships with businesses.
“Do not be afraid to walk away from a deal when you have serious doubts,” they write. “No amount of money is worth compromising your organization’s integrity.”
The guide includes a summary of tax laws and a list of resources for fund raisers, including the Statements of Ethical Principles issued by the National Society of Fund Raising Executives.
