Guide to Artist-in-Residency Programs

July 21, 2005 | Read Time: 1 minute

Artists Communities: A Directory of Residencies That Offer Time and Space for Creativity, Third Edition, edited by Deborah Obalil and Caitlin S. Glass, lists more than 350 organizations that provide artists, writers, and musicians with opportunities to pursue their craft. Updated since its previous publication in 2000, the directory gives contact information and a description of the types of programs offered by each organization. Produced by the directors of the Alliance of Artists Communities, it also includes in-depth profiles of 95 of the organizations listed. Groups as diverse as the Byrdcliffe Colony/Woodstock Guild, a 300-acre reserve in the Catskill Mountains where Wallace Stevens and Bob Dylan once stayed, and the Bogliasco Foundation, which offers respite on the Italian Riviera, are among those featured. For each group, the guide notes whether spouses are welcome and whether buildings are accessible to people with disabilities.
