Efficiently run social-welfare programs in the West Bank and Gaza Strip region of Palestine may have helped Hamas secure the popular support it needed to gain parliamentary seats in the January elections, the Los Angeles Times reports. Many residents of the contentious region say that Islamic charities associated with the resistance movement generally provide better food, education, and medical services than those run by the Palestinian Authority.
