Head of Charity Watchdog to Stop Blog

December 20, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

One of the nonprofit world’s most frequent critics is shutting down his blog and switching jobs.

Trent Stamp, executive director of Charity Navigator, a nonprofit watchdog group, in Mahwah, N.J., announced today that he is stepping down next month to lead the Eisner Foundation, in Los Angeles.

Mr. Stamp and Charity Navigator have been polarizing figures since they began rating charities in 2002.

Some nonprofit leaders have applauded Mr. Stamp for his sometimes harsh criticism, but others have argued that his group fails to give donors a full picture of the charities it evaluates.

In his final post on his blog, Trent Stamp’s Take, he writes he has been called both a “genius” and a “moron.”

“But for all of you, I wrote as truthfully and as passionately as I could. And most of you, I will miss. I’ve had fun. And next time some nonprofit leader does something stupid to dishonor the public trust, I’ll miss having a place to call him out. But that’s not my job anymore. Someone else will have to pick up the slack,” he writes.

Charity Navigator is currently searching for a new executive director.

What do you think? Was Trent Stamp’s Take an important nonprofit blog? What advice do you have for Mr. Stamp as he makes the transition from watchdog to foundation leader?
