Head of L.A. NAACP Steps Down Amid Sterling Scandal

May 2, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

Los Angeles NAACP President Leon Jenkins has resigned in light of the organization’s controversial relationship with now disgraced Clippers owner Donald Sterling, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The group honored Mr. Sterling with an award in 2009 and had been planning to give him a second award when a recording surfaced in which a man said to be Mr. Sterling suggested to a friend that she not associate publicly with African-Americans.

In his letter of resignation, Mr. Jenkins said the “legacy, history and reputation of the NAACP is more important to me than the presidency.”

The newspaper said Mr. Jenkins did not return calls Thursday requesting comment.
