Health Groups Brace for Texas Cuts

Social-service and health groups in the Austin, Tex., metropolitan area are bracing for the impact of state budget cuts that will take effect in September, writes the Austin American-Statesman.
Groups that provide family planning and reproductive health care will see cuts, as will organizations that aid mentally ill adults, elderly in home care, and doctors training for primary-care work. Health and human services accounted for three-quarters of $15-billion in spending reductions included in the state’s two-year budget.
Family-planning services in Travis County, which includes the capital, will see state funds drop by two-thirds as legislators cut aid to Planned Parenthood and other groups that provide abortions. Officials with the organizations said the cuts would affect programs to provide birth control and cancer screenings to low-income women.
