Hospital Fund Raisers Report Rise in Compensation of 4.5%

Fund raisers at hospitals and other health-care institutions earned a median of $80,000 last year, up 4.5 percent from 1999, according to a new survey.

The compensation figure, which reflects salary, cash bonuses, and deferred compensation, was highest for chief executive officers of foundations that raise money for health-care groups.
The median cash compensation last year for those top officials was $88,000, meaning half earned more and half earned less.
The survey was conducted by Executive Compensation Concepts, a consulting company in Baltimore, for the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, in Falls Church, Va. The association’s members raise money for hospitals, nursing homes, and other health-care providers.
More than 400 of the group’s 3,100 members provided data for the survey.
Among fund-raising officials at all institutions, 38 percent earned either cash bonuses or deferred compensation in addition to their base salary, up from 25 percent in 1997.
The median size of cash bonuses in 2000 was $8,358.
