How a $3,000 Gift Led to $53,000 More

As a fundraiser for Crisis Assistance Ministry in Charlotte, N.C., Doug Hartjes noticed something very rare: A donor made a first gift of $3,000.
Mr. Hartjes quickly called the donor and said, “I’ve got to meet you in person to thank you for this very generous gift.” He arranged a meeting for that very day — and the supporter made another gift. And after cultivating the donor over time, Mr. Hartjes was able to get a gift of property from the supporter worth $50,000.
