The Guide to Intelligent Giving
by Joanna L. Krotz

This book is a how-to guide for donors who not know where to start. Joanna L. Krotz, a writer and contributing editor to Town & Country magazine (which produced the book), steers readers through the basics, such as how to identify which causes donors would like to support, find charities that deserve aid, and set up ways to give, such as family foundations or donor-advised funds.

Ms. Klotz speaks to the philanthropists Doris Buffett, Jeff Skoll, and others about their foundations and what motivates their giving. She advises those who wish to conduct their own grant making to support grantees for an extended period of time. “Organizations work best when they can develop a long-term program,” she writes, “and bank on funding it for some years.”

Ms. Klotz includes a chart from the National Philanthropic Trust that compares donor-advised funds, supporting organizations, and private foundations and discusses what each of them are as well as their start-up costs, administrative fees, and tax deductions. She also devotes a chapter to a list of resources that readers can use to learn more about giving.
