How Foundations Can Help Prevent Homelessness

November 13, 2003 | Read Time: 1 minute

Ending Homelessness: the Philanthropic Roledescribes ways that foundations could help bring about an end to homelessness. According to the report, a very small portion of philanthropic dollars is allocated to helping homeless people, and much of that money provides direct, temporary services. The authors suggest that grant makers collaborate with advocates, policy makers, and researchers to remedy the causes of homelessness, for example, by working to increase the availability of low-cost housing or helping people leaving prison. The guide includes examples of grants that foundations have made. The Fannie Mae Foundation, in Washington, for instance, has created a Web site to help scholars and policy makers share new ideas for low-cost housing and community-development programs. In addition to the print version, this report is also available for download on the Web sites of the National Center on Family Homelessness (http://www.familyhomelessness.org), the Neighborhood Funders Group (http://www. nfg.org), and the Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation (http://www.schwabfoundation.org).
