Working With Start-Ups: Grant Makers and New Organizations, by Ellen Arrick and Anne Mackinnon, describes the responsibilities of a foundation when helping to form a new organization. Ms. Arrick and Ms. Mackinnon both work for GrantCraft, a project of the Ford Foundation, in New York, that produces case studies, guides, and videos designed to assist foundations. Their publication, which seeks to help grant makers determine if a new charity is necessary and its formation timely, discusses how a grant maker can guide and support a new group as it begins to operate independently. The book also gives suggestions for recruiting executive officers and board members, as well as working with a new organization to develop a long-term plan and establish a fund-raising program.
