How Technology Will Change Philanthropy

January 6, 2010 | Read Time: 1 minute

The ever-growing availability of data—and evolving technology that makes it easy for people to share, analyze, and work with the information—will have far-reaching effects in the nonprofit world, according to a new paper.

“Disrupting Philanthropy: Technology and the Future of the Social Sector” argues that digital technology will change the way donors, foundations, and others make giving decisions; how charities assess their work; and the roles and structures of both grant makers and nonprofit groups.

Commissioned by the Center for Strategic Philanthropy and Civil Society at Duke University, the paper was written by Lucy Bernholz, a consultant to foundations, with Edward Skloot, the center’s director, and Barry Varela, who directs the center’s Teaching Case Writing program.
