How to Persuade Baby-Boomer Women to Give

April 18, 2010 | Read Time: 1 minute

Women, Wealth & Giving: The Virtuous Legacy of the Boom Generation
by Margaret May Damen and Niki Nicastro McCuistion

The baby-boom generation is the wealthiest one yet, and women will make up 54 percent of that population by the year 2030. Women also currently control almost 60 percent of the nation’s wealth, signaling a significant shift for philanthropy in the future.

Margaret May Damen, founder and president of the Institute of Women and Wealth, and Niki Nicastro McCuistion, a fund-raising consultant, focus on the giving patterns and styles of baby-boomer women and provide advice to help fund raisers attract the women who wish to give to charity.

Women are increasingly drawn to nontraditional charities and to community and women’s foundations, the authors write. They are also further scrutinizing and conducting research on charities, seeking “well-run” organizations.

According to the authors, women exhibit four types of giving styles:

Some are risk takers and very open and vocal givers; others are eclectic in their giving and keen networkers; some support grass-roots projects and prefer causes that are not well known or trendy; and still others make their gifts largely based on empathy.
