Illinois Nonprofit Hospital Bill Shelved

April 4, 2006

An Illinois proposal that would regulate how much free medical care nonprofit hospitals must provide has been shelved to allow for further negotiations between state lawmakers and hospitals, reports Reuters. The legislation would have forced hospitals to offer charity care equal to at least 8 percent of their total operating costs or risk losing their tax-exempt status.
