IMMIGRATION

January 25, 2006

Charities that facilitate employment for illegal immigrants in California could face criminal prosecution under a new immigration bill if such organizations help day laborers without first ensuring they are not working illegally, reports theNorth County Times, in Escondido, Calif. Organizations that help immigrants find work say the bill would drive immigrants even further underground if employers and laborers stopped using their services. A spokeswoman for Interfaith Community Services, who estimates that about half of their clients are illegal immigrants, told the newspaper, “No matter what, people are going to continue to hire illegal workers.”
