Impromptu Gift Saves Yiddish Theater Materials
August 24, 2006
Eli Broad, the Los Angeles philanthropist, said on Tuesday that he had given $186,000 to the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, in New York, to restore photographs, costumes, music manuscripts, and other materials from the golden age of Yiddish theater, reports The New York Times.
Mr. Broad said he decided to make the gift after reading about the aging collection in the Times, saying he had fond memories of his parents talking about the Yiddish plays they had seen during his childhood in the Bronx.
