Indiana U. Philanthropy School’s Dean to Exit

March 12, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

Gene Tempel, founding dean of Indiana University’s first-of-its-kind school of philanthropy, will leave the post at the end of this year, the Indianapolis Business Journal reports.

The university said Tuesday that a search is under way for a successor to Mr. Tempel, 66, a nationally recognized authority on giving and nonprofits. Indiana’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, which opened last year, is believed to be the first in the world offering bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in philanthropy.

Mr. Tempel, who previously headed Indiana’s Center on Philanthropy, had agreed to lead the Lilly school for two years. The university said he will return in a new faculty role after a period of conducting research and spending time with his family.
