The UnitedHealth Group, in Minnetonka, Minn., is expected to announce today that it is donating $10-million to help build medical schools at the University of California’s Riverside and Merced campuses, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The donation represents partial payment on a $50-million donation pledge the insurance company made last year to California state regulators when the company sought approval to buy PacifiCare Health Systems, in Cypress, Calif.
The donation is being made in part to help head off an estimated shortage of 17,000 doctors in the state by 2015. It will be divided equally between the two campuses and paid out over the next three years.
