Goodwill Industries International said Monday that it is investigating a potential security breach that could have exposed credit card information from customers at its chain of thrift stores, writes The New York Times.
In a statement, the Rockville, Md.-based charity said it had been contacted by federal authorities about possible data theft at its U.S. outlets. “At this point, no breach has been confirmed, but an investigation is underway,” the organization said.
Goodwill operates 2,900 stores that sell donated clothes and other goods, with proceeds funding job training, work placement, and other community initiatives. If the breach is confirmed, it would the sixth major chain compromised recently, following Target, P.F. Chang’s, Neiman Marcus, Michaels, and Sally Beauty Supply. A group of Eastern European cyber criminals is believed to be behind those attacks.
