IRS Clarifies Designation on Filing Rules Idea

The I.R.S. has clarified the identification number of its recent announcement on a proposed change in the threshold above which tax-exempt groups are required to file informational tax returns that detail their finances (The Chronicle, November 27).
Non-profit organizations must provide such a return — known as the Form 990 — if their annual gross receipts total more than $25,000. The I.R.S. is considering a proposal to raise that threshold, perhaps to $40,000 or $100,000.
Comments on the idea, which must be submitted to the government by February 23, should make clear they are in response to I.R.S. Announcement 97-115, not 97-114, the designation the service first used to identify its request for comments.
