IRS Criticized for Not Investigating Two Conservative Churches

A group of religious leaders has charged that the Internal Revenue Service is ignoring its complaint about two Ohio churches that could be violating the law by engaging in partisan politics, The New York Times reports.
The critics of the IRS said that Fairfield Christian Church, and World Harvest Church, in Columbus, have participated in political activities that support a conservative political agenda, and said they felt the IRS was moving quickly to investigate liberal churches but not conservative ones.
The IRS did not comment directly on the charges, but said it was moving quickly to investigate any potential violations during the 2006 electoral season.
A leader of World Harvest Church said the criticism was part of a “campaign of harassment” by what he called “left-leaning clergy.” Fairfield Christian Church leaders did not respond to the Times article.
