IRS Warns of Delays on Charity Applications

September 28, 2006

TAX WATCH

By Elizabeth Schwinn

Many of the organizations that have applied to the Internal Revenue Service for tax-exempt status should expect lengthy delays before approval, due to a backlog of applications, the revenue service said in a notice.

The tax agency noted that agents are only now being assigned to some of the applications that the revenue service received last December.

Some applications may be processed within 60 days if they are complete and do not raise complex issues that require “additional development” by tax agents, the agency said.

The notice is available online.
