Israel’s Bid to Join International Red Cross Blocked

A bid to allow Magen David Adom, the Israeli Red Cross, to officially join the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies hit a snag Tuesday when Muslim members used procedural moves to block the effort during a conference in Geneva, reports the Associated Press.
Israelis have been seeking full membership in the Red Cross since 1949, but have been excluded in part because the federation did not want to adopt a new symbol. However, its members recently agreed to a new symbol, a red diamond, which was expected to pave the way for Magen David Adom’s joining the group.
