When a U.S. military airstrike hit a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Afghanistan this past fall, Jason Cone stepped before TV cameras and called for a war-crimes investigation.

It was a media moment that Mr. Cone, a former journalist, typically trained others to handle. Before his June selection as the global medical charity’s U.S. executive director, he spent more than six years leading its communications efforts. His digital and visual projects included a documentary series about child malnutrition that was nominated for an Emmy.

Mr. Cone’s public push for an independent inquiry of the airstrike continues, but don’t expect to see him on TV beyond that. “The face of Doctors Without Borders is the aid worker in the field,” he says. “That won’t change.”
