Jerry Falwell and his son, Jerry Falwell Jr., hope to raise $1-billion for their evangelical institution, Liberty University, reports Forbes.
Getting there will certainly not be easy. The Falwells have been paying off more than $100-million in debts, the magazine says, and donations to the church that once supported Liberty University have slowed to a trickle.
From its inception in 1971, the university has grown from a single-room Bible class into a 4,400-acre campus with more than 20,000 students enrolled on the campus or via online courses. Liberty has a new law school, 10 dormitories, a football clubhouse, and a chapel in the works.
