KATRINA PETS
January 4, 2006
Animal-welfare workers in Mississippi are overwhelmed by the number of puppies roaming the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina, reports the Associated Press. The Humane Society of South Mississippi, built for 75 animals, now houses about 250 cats and dogs, including about 50 puppies. In November, about 300 animals that were either too old or sick to be adopted had to be euthanized, and as many as 75 new animals arrive daily.
