Kellogg Foundation Selects Head of Mich. Programs; New Director at MOCA Los Angeles; Jeremy Nowak Dies

Faye Alexander Nelson, who recently completed the Sojourner Truth fellowship at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, has been selected as director of Michigan programs. She is based in the $8.2 billion foundation’s Detroit office.
American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science
David Doneson has been named CEO of this fundraising arm for the Weizmann Institute of Science, a research institution based in Rehovot, Israel. He succeeds Marshall Levin, who has led the group since 2008. The American Committee frequently appears on the Philanthropy 400, making the list of America’s biggest charities 20 times since 1991.
Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles
Klaus Biesenbach, chief curator at large at the Museum of Modern Art and director of MoMA PS1, its sister institution in Long Island City, has joined the West Coast museum as director.
More New CEOs
Frank Baiocchi, senior program officer at the Polk Brothers Foundation, has been tapped as executive director of the Johnson Family Foundation. He succeeds Richard Burns, who has served as interim executive director for the past year.
Jason Busch, director of the Jason Jacques Gallery, will join the American Folk Art Museum as executive director in September. He replaces Anne-Imelda Radice, who left the museum in March.
John Fodor, who recently retired as executive vice president of global distribution and at the Capital Group/American Funds, has been appointed interim president and CEO of the University of Connecticut Foundation.
Susan Whealler Johnston has become president and CEO of the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the first woman to lead the group. Previously she was executive vice president and chief operating officer at the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. She succeeds John Walda, who has retired.
Joseph Mettimano, an associate pastor at the Orchard Church, in Arlington, Va., has joined Central Union Mission as its executive director. He follows David Treadwell, who has retired.
Ginger Rumph, vice president and chief operating officer at the Coalition for Nonprofit Housing & Economic Development, has been appointed founding executive director of the Douglass Community Land Trust.
Communities Foundation of Texas
The Dallas grant maker has promoted several program staff members.
Wende Burton, a project management consultant at the foundation since 2010, has been named senior director of philanthropy.
Kristin Kuhne, who created and led the foundation’s insights and analytics team for seven years, has been promoted to senior director of Educate Texas.
Reo Pruiett, who directed the college and career readiness portfolio, has also been named senior director of Educate Texas.
Other Notable Appointments
Kristy Gannon has been named chief operating officer of Fluxx, which produces grant-management software. She was previously a vice president there. Dan Schoenfeld, who was most recently director of grants and impact administration at the Knight Foundation, will become chief evangelist at Fluxx.
Andrea Cournoyer has joined the Hennepin Theatre Trust as director of public relations and communications. Previously she directed communications and marketing at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs.
Lauren Hall, assistant vice president for development at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, has been named chief development officer at the National Brain Tumor Society.
Mariann Hyland has been hired as vice president for people and culture at the Oregon Community Foundation, where she will oversee the foundation’s efforts to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in its grant making. Previously, she was assistant vice provost for academic affairs at the University of Oregon.
Jennifer Klahn has joined the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum as deputy director for external affairs, overseeing its fundraising programs. Previously she was vice president for philanthropy at the Archaeological Institute of America.
Teri Miller, director of business development at the Wilks Communications Group, has been appointed director of development at the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry.
Terry Morello, interim vice president for advancement and external affairs at the California Institute of the Arts since December, has accepted the role on a permanent basis. Previously she was chief advancement officer at the Public Theater and New York Shakespeare Festival.
Kerin Nash, associate area director the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, has been appointed director of development at Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School.
Departures
Alvin Awaya, vice president and CEO of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation’s office in Hawaii, will retire in November after 44 years at the grant maker. Corbett Kalama, vice president for real-estate investments and community affairs, has been promoted to succeed him, effective December 1.
Arthur Levine, president of the Woodrow Wilson Foundation since 2006, plans to leave the higher-education grant maker in July 2019.
Legacies
John Heyman, who served as president of the New York Foundation in the 1960s and 1970s, died on July 1. He was 95. During his tenure, he directed the foundation’s support of the civil-rights movement. He also served on its Board of Trustees from 1947 until 1982.
Jeremy Nowak, who served as president of the William Penn Foundation until 2012, died in Philadelphia on July 28 after suffering a heart attack earlier in the month. He was 66. He was also the founder of the Reinvestment Fund, and last year, he co-authored the book The New Localism: How Cities Can Thrive in the Age of Populism.
