Amount donated: $215-million
What gifts supported: A $100-million gift in 1998 was earmarked for research and $100-million in 2002 to recruit faculty, upgrade clinical programs, and construct facilities.


Carnegie Hall (New York)

Amount donated: $40-million
What gifts supported: $30-million donated in 2003 was earmarked to endow music-education programs.


Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation (New York)

Amount donated: $20-million
What gifts supported: $18.4-million was earmarked to construct and endow the organization’s new building, which opened in 2005, as well as to support arts-education programs and to commission a new work, “Shining Star,” by David Parsons.


The University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Mich.)

Amount donated: $8-million
What gifts supported: $5-million donated in 2004 paid for construction of the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and $3-million donated in 2006 went to endow its deanship.


National Academy Foundation (New York)

Amount donated: $6.6-million
What gifts supported: $1-million for scholarships in 2000 and $5.5-million in 2006 to expand the number of academies and for services such as regional conferences and advisory-board development for school leaders. Mr. Weill also donated $100,000 to buy tickets to the Broadway musical 42nd Street as part of an annual national conference for foundation teachers and administrators in 2004.


Paul Smith’s College (New York)

What gifts supported: $3-million donated in 1999 was used to construct a new library that is open to residents of the college town and $1.25-million donated in 2003 was earmarked to build a student center.
