Kofi Annan, former secretary general of the United Nations, has been named chairman of the new Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, an organization that receives funds from the Bill & Melinda Gates and the Rockefeller foundations, reports Reuters news service.
The organization, in Nairobi, is an African effort to help small-scale farmers throughout Africa fight poverty and hunger by increasing farm productivity and income, the news agency reports. The foundations established the alliance in 2006 with an initial $150-million grant.
“I hope in 10 to 20 years it will be possible to double, if not triple, agricultural productivity,” Mr. Annan says. “It is not just a dream, it is a dream that will be backed up with action.”
