Four Los Angeles nonprofit cultural organizations will each receive one-time payments of $5-million from the county government’s surplus money, reports the Los Angeles Times.

In addition, the county approved arts grants of $4.5-million in the coming fiscal year, up from $2.2-million the previous year. Los Angeles County’s 2007 budget of $20-billion includes $62.9-million for arts and culture, and was approved on Monday.

Laura Zucker, executive director of the County Arts Commission, called the increased arts grants “a step down an important road.”

The $5-million payments will go to: La Plaza de Cultura y Artes, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Music Center, and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
