La. Governor’s Fund Begins Disbursing Grants

July 14, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation, a charitable fund established by Gov. Kathleen Blanco, has started to disburse the $40-million it raised to help victims of last year’s hurricanes, reports The Times-Picayune, in New Orleans.

Despite its connection to Ms. Blanco, the fund said it now operates under an independent board of directors.

Also, volunteers continue to pour into the Gulf Coast to help rebuild the devastated region, reports The Washington Post.

In a first-person account written for the newspaper’s Travel section, a volunteer describes the difficult working conditions and his experience with two small nonprofit groups, Emergency Communities and Common Ground Collective.
