Labor Day Telethon Raises Record Amount
September 6, 2006
The actor Jerry Lewis’s annual Labor Day telethon raised a record $61-million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, reports the Chicago Tribune.
A review in The Washington Post called the 20-hour telethon a “noble event” that has raised more than $1.3-billion for the charity over the past 40 years, but said it is “also a schmaltzy, weepy, funny, moving, and gloriously goofy vaudeville show.”
