Lance Armstrong Says New Cancer Charity May Be in Offing

July 14, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

Disgraced former cycling champion Lance Armstrong tells The Des Moines Register he is weighing ways to ramp up his cancer charity work, including possibly launching a new foundation.

Mr. Armstrong said a new organization “is probably the most likely scenario” if he does not return to the Livestrong Foundation, a possibility recently floated by the charity’s president.

Livestrong, which the cyclist started in 1997 after battling testicular cancer, cut ties with its founder in November 2012 after a report by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency detailed his history of cheating. Doug Ulman, the charity’s president, told Esquire magazine the foundation “would welcome [Mr. Armstrong] back” if he decides to resume his work for cancer survivors, but Livestrong Chairman Jeff Garvey subsequently said Mr. Armstrong’s return “is not on the table.”

“I don’t see that happening anytime soon,” Mr. Armstrong said of a possible rapprochement with Livestrong. “In fact, I’m almost certain that’s not going to happen.”
