A Maryland county council has voted to close a nonprofit hospital that annually serves 188,000 patients — including most of the state’s very poor and uninsured residents, reports The Sun, in Baltimore.
The Prince George’s County Council voted not to accept Gov. Martin O’Malley’s $329-million plan to update and stabilize the hospital, which observers say has been plagued by poor management, budget deficits, and outmoded facilities. The plan would have included $159-million in state aid. Many state officials were angered at the outcome, saying the closure would overload many other nearby hospital systems.
The county council defended its decision, saying the proposed plan “didn’t accomplish the goal” of a long-term solution.
