Technology mogul Larry Ellison’s philanthropy has pledged $100-million to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative’s drive to wipe out the disease by 2018, Bloomberg reports.
The Lawrence Ellison Foundation provided the first $20-million of the gift last year. Nine other philanthropic groups have committed $535-million to the initiative, supplementing $1.8-billion from Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Polio is still found in a handful of countries, with most of last year’s 400 reported new cases occurring in Somalia.
Mr. Ellison, the co-founder and chief executive of software giant Oracle, ranked 26th on The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s Philanthropy 50 listing of the biggest U.S. donors of 2013.
