LAWMAKER’S CHARITY SCRUTINIZED

March 16, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

A charity started by a Colorado lawmaker to aid financially-strapped military families gave away just 46 percent of its money in aid, reports The Denver Post. Its founder, State Sen. Tom Wiens, released an audit this week after coming under scrutiny for failing to file a report with the Internal Revenue Service. Mr. Wiens also sponsored a resolution last year that encourages people in Colorado to consider contributing to his charity, the Stand in the Gap Project. In an interview, Mr. Wiens said that about 70 families were helped and that salary expenses of employees should count as direct aid to military families.
