650 Essential Nonprofit Law Questions Answered
by Bruce R. Hopkins
Bruce R. Hopkins, a lawyer in Kansas City, Mo., is the author or co-author of 15 books on the body of law that governs nonprofit organizations. This book is his attempt to present the basics of nonprofit law in an accessible, question-and-answer format.
Mr. Hopkins begins with the most fundamental of questions (“What is a nonprofit organization?”) and continues with 649 other queries that sometimes have lawyers or nonprofit employees scratching their heads. Among them: “Just what is this matter of nonprofit/for-profit competition all about?;” “Is payment of a bonus to an employee of a nonprofit organization legal?;” and “Are all tax-exempt organizations eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions?”
So that readers can more easily find the answers to questions that are nagging at them, Mr. Hopkins has divided the book into 19 chapters by category of nonprofit law, including nonprofit boards, principles of corporate governance, public-charity status, private inurement and private benefit, political activities, and colleges and universities.
Throughout the book, Mr. Hopkins also notes areas of nonprofit law that could be the source of new legislation.
