Leader of 9/11 Charity Is Fired Amid Fraud Charges

April 3, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Chris Burke, founder of Tuesday’s Children, a charity that supports families of victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks, was fired from the organization in January after he admitted that he spent $311,000 of the charity’s money on expenses not directly related to the organization’s mission, reports The New York Times.

Mr. Burke, 47, whose brother was a bond trader killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center, said he spent most of the money to help families not covered by Tuesday’s Children. However, charity officials said that Mr. Burke used some of the charity’s money to pay his mortgage and his credit-card bills.

Mr. Burke’s parents provided the charity with stock worth $500,000 to make up for the funds that were misspent and deal with related expenses.
