Lessons on Increasing Youth Participation

September 5, 2002 | Read Time: 1 minute

What Works in Youth Participation: Case Studies From Around the World, edited by Sylvia Golombek, takes a look at factors that encourage or inhibit the involvement of young people in efforts to build community ties. These issues are explored through case studies of existing youth-participation programs worldwide, each with descriptions of their achievements and challenges. The first of nine case studies examines challenges faced by Oliver Tayo in the Philippines, who worked to increase the number of young Filipinos taking part in reproductive-health education programs. Other case studies focus on what draws young people to participate in community-service activities and the obstacles that adults and youths face when working together. The last part of the publication points out lessons from the cases presented, such as the difference it makes when young people are encouraged to help adults make decisions.
