Angels of a Lower Flight, by Susie Scott Krabacher, is the autobiography of a former Playboy magazine model who founded the Mercy and Sharing Foundation, which does humanitarian work among children in Haiti. Ms. Krabacher, who was physically and sexually abused as a child in Alabama, went on to work with poor, sick, and malnourished orphans in Haiti during a time of civil upheaval. This memoir traces her transition from nude model to charity worker and president of a nonprofit group — a process that began after she watched a documentary about children starving in Mongolia. “My ability to care came from my own struggles,” she writes. “I am only outfitted to care for these children because I felt like a monster myself when I was a kid.”
