Lilly: $50-Million for Education

October 7, 1999 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Lilly Endowment, in Indianapolis, has started a $50-million grants program for Indiana community foundations that undertake efforts to improve the education of people in the region they serve.

Lilly Endowment leaders said they felt that community foundations were in a good position to gather experts to get a comprehensive view of the educational needs of their regions.

Community Alliances to Promote Education will provide up to 15 grants of $50,000 each to community foundations that want to develop ideas for education programs. The endowment will then select seven of those recipients to receive grants of up to $5-million to carry out their plans.

Lilly said it would consider a gamut of ideas that improve education at any level, including early-childhood education and adult literacy.
