Make a Difference: America’s Guide to Volunteering and Community Service, by Arthur I. Blaustein, provides information about volunteer opportunities at more than 185 nonprofit organizations throughout the United States. In this revised edition of the book, Mr. Blaustein, a professor of urban development and social history at the University of California at Berkeley, writes that the economic downturn and policies that are, according to the author, detrimental to the environment and civil liberties have increased the demand for volunteers to provide social services and do advocacy work. He offers brief descriptions of the missions of numerous nonprofit groups, including those working to help children and homeless people and those promoting community development. For each organization, the guide lists contact information and common activities that volunteers engage in. Throughout the book, brief quotes highlight the experiences of volunteers.
