LOBBYIST’S DONATIONS

Some campaign donations made by lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who pleaded guilty yesterday to bribing members of Congress, will be turned over to charity, reports the Chicago Tribune and Dow Jones Newswires. U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Dennis Hastert, a Republican from Illinois, said he will donate the contributions, which some say could total $69,000, to charity. At least five other recipients of Mr. Abramoff’s donations have announced they will either return the money or give it to charity, as well. According to a watchdog group, Mr. Hastert received the second-most in donations from the lobbyist. A spokesman for the congressmen said that while Mr. Hastert believed the donations were legal, “it is appropriate to donate the money to charity,” noting the charity had yet to be selected.
