Local United Ways Bring Home Awards for Fund-Raising Materials

March 23, 2000 | Read Time: 22 minutes

United Ways from around the nation have received awards for innovative fund-raising

and other communications materials in an annual competition sponsored by the United Way of America.

In this year’s contest, 268 pieces were chosen from among 1,760 entries to receive first-, second-, or third-place honors.

Ten of those winning pieces also earned a Best of Brand Award, a new honor that United Way of America instituted this year. The award honors materials that portray United Ways as community leaders that bring different parties together to work on tough social issues and achieve solid results.

Other new award categories were added this year. One was “Marketing Continuity.” United Way of America hopes to present a consistent public image for the 1,400 local United Ways it represents and demonstrate how they differ from other charities. This category honors those efforts.

The entries were judged by 49 experts in advertising, publishing, and fund raising. Among the 32 categories they rated: fund-raising brochures, posters, print advertising, radio and television advertisements, and special-event materials.

Some of the winning entries seek to make donors aware that their gifts to United Way are likely to help someone they know, such as a co-worker. Others provide free resources or information for certain groups in a region served by United Ways, such as young people. Still others thank donors or provide them with incentives, such as a print of original artwork.
