Lumina Foundation Names First Vice President of Equity, Culture, and Talent

Linh Nguyen will be the $1.6 billion foundation’s first vice president of equity, culture, and talent.

Most recently a partner at the Nonprofit Professionals Advisory Group, he previously served as chief operating officer at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation from 2013 until 2017.

Wege Foundation

James Logan has been chosen as the next president and CEO of the $288 million foundation.

He previously served as a program officer at the Greater New Orleans Foundation, where he developed and co-led its Environmental Fund’s Theory of Change and managed the Greater Together Fund for Racial Equity.


Year Up

Ellen McClain has been promoted from chief operating officer to president of the work-force development charity.

She will work alongside its founder, Gerald Chertavian, who will continue to serve as CEO.

More New CEOs

Gregg Betheil, president of the education group Pencil, has been promoted to CEO. In addition, Jessica Bynoe has been promoted from vice president and chief strategy officer to president, and Tracy Kebatta was hired as vice president of finance and administration. She recently completed her master’s degree in public policy at the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy.

Benjamin Drutman has been promoted to president of the Ronald M. Simon Family Foundation, which was previously known as the Simon Foundation for Education and Housing. He most recently served as executive director of its Simon Scholars Program.

Peter Mangone has been named president of the Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. He is an orthopedic surgeon in Asheville, N.C.

Cynthia Robinson, president of the Robertson Foundation for Government, has been appointed executive director of the Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund.

Rachel Roller, a health care consultant in Milwaukee, has been named president and CEO of the Dohmen Company Foundation. She succeeds Kathy Koshgarian, who will now serve as president and CEO of the Food Benefit Company and Food for Health.

Dan Smith, chief financial officer at Holt International Children’s Services, has stepped up as interim CEO. He follows Phil Littleton, who has resigned after 18 years as its president and CEO.

Matthew Spivey, interim CEO of the San Francisco Symphony since July 2021, will continue in the role permanently. He joined the performing-arts group in 2015 and previously served as its chief programming officer.

Ann Davis Vaughan, a former investigative reporter for the Wall Street Journal, has stepped in as acting CEO of the GroundTruth Project. She joined its board in early 2019 and most recently served as chair of its Development Committee.

Other Notable Appointments

Dianne Chaves, director of the Autism Community in Action, has been named senior director of program operations at Think Together, which offers after-school programs and other educational support in California schools. Katie Roth has also joined the group as executive director of philanthropy. Most recently she was executive director of PowerMyLearning.

Robert Garland, resident choreographer and school director at Dance Theatre of Harlem, will become its artistic director on June 30, 2023. He will succeed Virginia Johnson, who plans to retire at the end of the 2022-23 season.

Treye Johnson, program manager for the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s Program on Economic Inclusion, will join the George Gund Foundation next month as program director for its Vibrant Neighborhoods and Inclusive Economy program.

Adam Linker has been promoted from director of programs to vice president of programs at the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust.

Michal Marcus, executive director of HFLA of Northeast Ohio, has been hired as a program officer at the Burton D. Morgan Foundation.

Rajesh Mirchandani has joined Feeding America as chief communications and community engagement officer. He most recently worked at the United Nations Foundation, where he was senior adviser to the executive office and chief communications officer.

Departures

Richard Armstrong, director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation since 2008, intends to retire next year.

Gary Romero, director of grants management, and Ellen Solowey, senior program officer, have both retired from the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust. They each worked at the $574 million foundation for 15 years.
