MacArthur Fund Gives $26-Million to Help Chicago’s Poor

May 24, 2007

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation will donate $26-million to revitalize poor neighborhoods and protect diversity in gentrifying areas in its hometown of Chicago, reports The Chicago Tribune.

Over the next five years, the foundation will help 16 of the poorest neighborhoods in Chicago. The grant program includes money to assist ex-offenders, promote housing and commercial development, and aid community organizations.

“Chicago’s neighborhoods, even its poorest, are significant assets, holding tremendous untapped human and economic potential,” says Jonathan Fanton, MacArthur’s president.
