Major Museums Sour on Photo-Facilitating ‘Selfie Sticks’

Several prominent museums have banned “selfie sticks” or are mulling doing so, citing concerns that the gadgets that allow users to hold cameras at a distance and take better self-portraits pose a hazard to visitors and exhibits, CBS New York and Washington’s WJLA television report.
New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Getty Center in Los Angeles, and the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum in Washington have recently barred selfie sticks, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is considering a ban. “You can, just by looking at this, imagine the havoc a selfie stick might wreak in this kind of space,” said Jennifer Northrup of the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, which has also disallowed the devices.
