Mass. Governor Introduces Bill on Religious Charities
March 17, 2006
Gov. Mitt Romney, Republican of Massachusetts, has asked the legislature to pass the Protecting Religious Freedom bill, a measure that would allow religious groups to refuse to arrange adoptions for gay couples in the state, reports the Associated Press.
Mr. Romney has sent lawmakers a draft measure to consider, exempting religious groups from an antidiscrimination law that requires adoption-services organizations to allow gay couples to adopt children.
The Democratic leaders in both houses of the state legislature have voiced opposition to the proposal.
