Mass. Nonprofit Workers Among Highest Earners

Nonprofit employees in Massachusetts earned some of the highest wages in the country during the recession, outstripping private-sector employees on average, according to the Lowell Sun, which cites recently released data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nonprofit workers, who make up about 17 percent the state’s work force, made $57,825 on average in 2012, up 6 percent from 2007, according to the data.

Although the state is home to many world-class hospitals and universities, many other nonprofits are dispersed throughout the state, said Jim Klocke, chief executive of the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network. “We think that’s the single best measure of scale and impact and economic benefits,” Mr. Klocke said. “You don’t get to have one of the largest nonprofit sectors in the country if it’s all concentrated in one city or one sub-sector.”
